The Experience

You’re surrounded by nature – walkers will head to the Jalón valley or the Sierra de Bernia mountain range for fantastic hiking, birdwatching and views down to the sea. Return to your own eight acres of pine-covered Moorish terraces, slip into the salt water pool, doze on a lounger or find a spot in the garden for a quiet read.

There’s plenty of space inside too with a big sitting/dining room, a separate TV room and a small study area, all on different levels. The galley kitchen has all the kit you need for holiday cooking and a door out to a kitchen patio, so you can sunbathe while waiting for something to boil. There are different terraces outdoors too so you shan’t feel on top of one another. Bedrooms (one downstairs, three up) are a good size and have mountain views to go with your morning cuppa.

Cycle, swim, trek on a horse. Evenings can be spent enjoying the scent of thyme and rosemary as the sun sets and the profound peace deepens.

Reviews

Casa Grillo is a fascinating converted finca on a generous, breathtaking plot in the dramatic mountain scenery below the Bernia ridge. A place to relax within the sounds of nature, in charmingly converted rustic rooms delightfully furnished – all this and the coast is just over a half hour away. There are intriguing towns to visit too: Jalón with its weekly rastro, and the old towns of Bodega and Benissa.

Location

The neighbourhood

There is a restaurant in Pinos, about 4km away. Benissa is a 22-minute drive for excellent shops and restaurants. Jalón has some good restaurants and also a superb Rastro market at weekends. The nearest beaches are at Moraira, just over half an hour, for crystal clear waters, dramatic scenery and wide sands. Alicante and the airport are one hour and ten minutes away.

Local points of interest from Willem Pieffers & Richard Steenblik

  • Hike around Sierra de Bernia: a stunning 3.5-hour hike that takes you up the impressive mountain range and through a tunnel to the other side for spectacular views over the entire Costa Blanca.
  • Visit the old centre of the white fishing village of Altea, 40 minutes away by car. Enjoy the creative atmosphere among the white houses and shops, visit the church with its blue domes and dine out in one of the numerous restaurants.
  • Birdwatching: enjoy observing black redstarts and raven families with newly fledged young; listen to nightingales in spring, discover a shy blue rock thrush and spot a bee-eater high in the sky.
  • Have a good meal in the centre of Benissa – Restaurant ´Cuina de Dos´ is highly recommended. They have elevated Mediterranean cuisine to an art and deliver high quality for a very reasonable price.
  • The flea market on Saturday morning in Jalón, 25 minutes away: here many a person has made the find of a lifetime. Stop for a coffee at restaurant/bar Haleluya just opposite, and next to it is the wine cooperative of Jalón.
  • Nice beaches on the Costa de Benissa: on the coastal road between Moraira and Calpe are several nice bays where you can enjoy the sun. At Cala La Fustera and Cala Baladrar, you can also have a very good meal.
