The Experience

There are a number of terraces and a fine loggia from which you have superb seaward south-easterly views of sierras lined with Moorish terraces, pines and occasional palms fronting the blue line of the Mediterranean at Calpe. Inside is stylish, uncluttered and spacious: walk straight in to an open plan dining and sitting room with a wood-burner for those odd chilly evenings. There’s a little study area too and, on the first floor, an extra sitting room.

The kitchen has plenty of gear and a lovely old wooden table so all can join in with preparing food, but you’ll mostly be eating outdoors, mesmerised by the views. The grounds extend to about four acres and the pool is grand for cooling off. Bedrooms (one on the ground floor) are elegant and a good size; the master bedroom has its own outdoor terrace, so you can be private when you want.

Just 4km away in Pinos find a pleasant restaurant with sea views serving good Spanish food.

We think you'll love

  • Taking an evening glass of wine to the loggia and feeling blessed to be looking at the mountains
  • Having so much space inside and out – even with eight people it won't feel crowded
  • Being able to get to the coast for a day, escaping to the peace and quiet in the evening

Reviews

Casa Montaña is an elegant, spacious retreat in bewitching mountain scenery below the Bernia ridge. A place to relax within sounds of nature, in superbly proportioned and arranged rooms exquisitely furnished – and the coast is just over a half hour away. Plus there are intriguing towns to visit, such as Jalón with its weekly rastro, Bodega and Benissa with its fascinating old town.

Location

The neighbourhood

You really are in a heavenly spot utterly surrounded by greenery, mountains and many birds – do bring binoculars if you like to watch them. Committed walkers will head to the Sierra de Bernia, considered one of the best walks in Europe, with dramatic views from the ridge. Benissa is the nearest town, 22 mins in the car, for some excellent shops and restaurants. Jalón has a weekend Rastro market.

Local points of interest from Willem Pieffers & Richard Steenblik

  • Visit the old centre of the white fishing village of Altea, 40 minutes away by car. Enjoy the creative atmosphere among the white houses and shops, visit the church with its blue domes and dine out in one of the numerous restaurants.
  • Have a good meal in the centre of Benissa – Restaurant ´Cuina de Dos´ is highly recommended. They have elevated Mediterranean cuisine to an art and deliver high quality for a very reasonable price.
  • Hike around Sierra de Bernia: a stunning 3.5-hour hike that takes you up the impressive mountain range and through a tunnel to the other side for spectacular views over the entire Costa Blanca.
  • The flea market on Saturday morning in Jalón, 25 minutes away: here many a person has made the find of a lifetime. Stop for a coffee at restaurant/bar Haleluya just opposite, and next to it is the wine cooperative of Jalón.
  • Birdwatching: enjoy observing black redstarts and raven families with newly fledged young; listen to nightingales in spring, discover a shy blue rock thrush and spot a bee-eater high in the sky.
  • Nice beaches on the Costa de Benissa: on the coastal road between Moraira and Calpe are several nice bays where you can enjoy the sun. At Cala La Fustera and Cala Baladrar, you can also have a very good meal.
