The Experience
Vilafamès is a pretty medieval village clinging to the slopes of a mountain above rolling olive and almond groves. Much of the village is built from red-hued regional rock, including a 17th-century manor house, now a charming, five-storey hotel with glorious and inspiring views. A clever renovation preserved hand-crafted tiles and original balconies while adding glowing wood-burners and smart bathrooms.
Inside all is homely: chunky beams, rustic walls and warm lighting to ease you into laid-back holiday mode. A peaceful night’s sleep is followed by breakfast on the leafy green terrace with its wonderful views: homemade and locally sourced produce including jamón, pan con tomato, and cakes and pastries – as you gaze at those rippling views.
Step out to winding, cobbled streets and visit the ancient castle, church, art gallery and a clutch of bars and restaurants. Further afield are vineyards, horse riding and golf.

Location
The neighbourhood
Vilafamès is a captivating place to explore, with winding streets and a fascinating medieval history. Visit the 14th-century Castillo, a higgledy piggledy fortress that appears to grow out of the rock, the Asunción church is an impressive Baroque building, and the local art gallery, housed in an ancient palace. Castellón de la Plana, the region's capital is 25 km and the coast a 20-minute drive. The airport is nearby but well positioned so you won’t hear the noise of planes.
Local points of interest from Gloria Diaz-Varela Parada
- ANCIENT QUARTER OF VILAFAMES-What better way to kick off your stay than by getting to know the area. We would recommend a guided tour of the Vilafamés ancient quarter. Discover its rich history within its ancient streets and buildings.
- MODERN ART MUSEUM– One of the many features of the municipality is the Vicente Aguilera Cerni Museum of Modern Art. Named after this prestigious historian and art critic, the building’s impressive façade alone is worth seeing.
- VISIT THE ANCIENT IBERIAN VILLAGE– Before your day comes to an end, we would highly recommend a visit to the Iberian Village, where excavations of a metre and a half deep have revealed the wall that enclosed the village, or the stones they used to mill the wheat
- The Wine Route to Vilafamés takes in a series of different wine cellars and finishes at the renowned Bodega Mayo Garcia (in the town of Vilafamés itself). We have an exclusive arrangement with this Bodega for guided tours, which are free of charge exclusively for El Jardin Vertical guests.
- CLUB DE GOLF DEL MEDITERRANEO– We would recommend an afternoon’s golf at the Club de Golf del Mediterráneo. Scratch golfers to absolute beginners can try their swing on this 18 hole course. There is also a 20% discount on the green fees for clients of El Jardín Vertical.
