Charming 17th century bakehouse in tranquil countryside. Perfect for exploring Brittany and Normandy - only 20km to Le Mont-Saint-Michel

Sleeps 2

The Experience

This former bakehouse and piggery dating from the 1600s has been sympathetically renovated into a cottage for two. Mark and Tricia, who live across the courtyard in their farmhouse B&B, crafted much of the furniture themselves, including the four-poster bed, oak cabinets and country-style kitchen.

The open-plan kitchen and living area is a sociable place to rustle up supper or walk to the B&B across the courtyard for aperitifs and dinner prepared by your hosts. Come back to a soak in the roll-top tub and relax by the wood burning stove.

The cottage is in the grounds of the B&B, surrounded by a hectare of landscaped gardens, and you have your own private garden and patio for morning coffee or a barbecue. Drive 20 minutes to Dol de Bretagne for restaurants, or to Le Mont-St-Michel – borrow a bicycle and get there in an hour. Come back to a welcome hamper with delicious treats of local cider, cheese and bread.

A true hidden gem. Hidden in the sense that it has a ‘middle of nowhere’ feel to it, while still in easy driving vicinity of popular Brittany/Normandy places like Mont St Michel, Cancale, St Malo, Dinard and medieval Dinan. And a gem in multiple senses. First the house itself is beautiful with eye for detail, especially in the woodwork. The one bedroom, bathroom and kitchen are surprisingly spacious. The garden is huge and we appreciated full privacy granted by our hosts Tricia and Mark. The surroundings make for nice walks and during the sunset period you are likely to spot local wildlife!

Patrick, Amsterdam

We had a lovely stay. The house is perfect. They thought about everything and it's realy clean. The garden is also perfect. The only thing you can hear are the birds.

Maaike, Rotterdam

An absolutely delightful cottage, very clean and thoughtfully equipped and furnished. It was a great place to have as a base to explore the area, but as the week went on we found we also wanted to spend time at the cottage and in the beautiful, restful garden. Having our morning cup of tea, sitting in bed, looking out of the doors to the garden, with the birds feeding and the red squirrels playing was a particular highlight each day. Tricia and Mark were so welcoming and helpful. We would definitely hope to come back again soon. You won't be disappointed if you choose Le Fournil.

Haydn, Exmouth, UK

We have had the most delightful few days at Le Fournil where we felt truly immersed in the wildlife and serenity of the place - both grounds and gite. Woodland walks, wildlife spotting (deer, red squirrel and a great spotted woodpecker to name a few highlights!) and utter relaxation made our stay at Le Pas Cru truly memorable and completely restorative. Tricia and Mark are the perfect hosts: on hand if you need anything but very discreet, allowing you to just 'be' in the beautiful surroundings. A very special place which we know we will return to and 5 stars are really not enough!

Yvonne and Dave, London

We loved our visit to Le Fournil. Mark and Tricia are lovely hosts, and have done an amazing job remodeling the old Bake House into a cozy and modern haven. We felt immediately at home, and had lazy mornings enjoying the cottage and gardens, and spent our days visiting nearby sights. We couldn't wait to return each evening, and often cooked dinner in the amazing kitchen. As a designer, Stephen was so impressed with the cabinet's beaded inset detailing, and the woodwork and furniture that Mark and Tricia built. We look forward to returning in the future and staying longer!

Stephen, Sunset Beach

Enchanting, magical, so peaceful to be surrounded by nature in a beautifully crafted cottage converted from an old bread oven and outbuilding by the very talented Tricia and Mark. The wooded with grounds are extensive and private , spectacular at any time of the year. The cottage is equipped with everything you could wish for and has been designed and decorated with very good and elegant taste. 5 stars isn’t quite enough !

Irene, Jersey

A magical vacation home surrounded by nature and tranquility. It is very tastefully and stylishly furnished, very high quality and natural materials were used. a small paradise. The landlords are attentive, courteous and on site Simply top !

Le Pas Cru is a perfect hideaway. Beautiful and in a wonderful garden with plenty of trees.

Marielle, Maastricht

Le Pas Cru has a beautifully renovated cottage called Le Fournil, situated in a wonderful garden. The only noise you hear are the singing birds. Lots of interesting plaes to visit nearby, Mont St. Michel is only a 20 min drive away.

Philly, Zaamslag

Le Fournil is a delightful cottage with an exceptional beautiful garden. The cottage was very clean, neat, tidy and tasteful. Everything was provided for and the owners were very kind and helpful. After many years of travelling and having holidays we can say this is one of the nicest cottages we ever had.

Arjen, Ridderkerk

We loved our stay in this haven of tranquility! The cottage has been lovingly and tastefully restored and is equipped with everything you could need, with luxuries like the roll-top bath and generous-sized (beautiful) bed. A peaceful and pretty setting with views onto a lovely private garden and space to sit or eat outside. Hosts were friendly and on hand if needed but also respectful of privacy. The cottage is well-located for taking trips to explore the region, either to the coast or inland. Lovely to come back to after a day out - we would happily stay again. Thoroughly recommend!

Sarah, Paris

We loved this transformed bakehouse: the nice materials, the cosiness, the luxurious bath, the stylish decorations, the well kept garden... Tricia and Mark are very discrete but at the same time very accessible. A perfect stay!

Katrien, Melle

We had a lovely week in Le Fournil. It’s a spacious and luxuries cottage with a beautiful garden where you can enjoy the tranquility and the visiting wildlife. And while the cottage is situated in a nice and quite area there are lots of beautiful and interesting places to visit close by.

Arjen & Saskia, Amsterdam

A beautiful appartement, a fully equiped kitchen, and a great garden with different views and sitting areas; also a good location to explore the beautiful countryside, to visit interesting cities (Saint-Malo, Dinan, Vitré, Mont Saint Michel, Fougères, etc), castles (Combourg, Vitré) and gardens (Parc Botanique de Haute Bretagne) Tricia & Mark are warm and welcoming hosts. We loved our stay at Le Pas Cru!

Ria, Oranjewoud

We spent a week at le fournil,it was a beautiful place the accommodation was renovated by Tricia and Mark perfectly...an oasis of peace and tranquility . A perfect place for a relaxing holiday.

Pauline, Wolverhampton

We came back to Le Fournil in September. It was the 2nd time we stayed here and it will not be the last. Tricia and Mark are nice and helpful and managed to improve the house - which was not necessary at all - with nice pictures and a little garden makeover. The peacefulness and beauty of the garden and the property is outstanding and the furniture and love for details in the house is a blessing. Most important in these days: they really care for additional measures concerning Covid, like putting away stuff that is not necessary in the house or special disinfection.

Bettina, Karlsruhe, Germany

We have enjoyed ‘Le Fournil, Le Pas Cru’ in Trans-la-Forêt, Brittany very much. Located right on the border of Brittany and Normandy and a 20 minute drive from Le Mont Saint-Michel. We stayed there for a week and were able to drive to many interesting locations from there within an hour. Mark and Tricia are very kind and they do their very best to make you feel at home and welcome. Their gardens are just wonderful and full of wildlife. The deers come up to the garden and if you’re lucky, you can spot them when you open up the curtains from the bedroom. We definitely would like to come back!

Bjorn, Antwerp

Highly recommended for those looking for a cottage for peace and quietness and with a beautiful natural environment or a nature garden. The cottage is beautifully and luxuriously decorated. In the large garden you have complete privacy and you always can find a place to sit either in the sun or in the shade. The owners are very friendly and respect your privacy very highly.

Reinder, Garyp

Wonderful in every single detail! Beautiful house, lovely interior with nice decorations. Very beautiful (private) garden with a lot of wildlife. Everything was taken care of. We had a very pleasant stay and certainly will come back!

Mark & Tricia Lovesey

Tricia is a former bank auditor from Lancashire and Mark was a professional photographer. They decided to change their lifestyle in 2004 and moved to France to start a new life, renovating the unloved, almost derelict farmhouse into a B&B before finishing the renovation of the cottage in late summer 2019. Their achievements are incredible - not only did they do much of the work themselves, but they went on to master the art of carpentry and cabinet making. They have lovingly created a wonderful retreat and are friendly, warm and welcoming.
