The Experience

This 1870s house, part of a terrace, sits in the heart of old Béziers. A short walk away find the magnificent 12th-century cathedral siting in a beautiful square with superb views. The quirky bed-sitter is all yours; a long counter round the original stone sink, a seating bench for two (not large) people, a folding metal table and chairs, a wicker chair for reading.

Carole lives on the two floors above and hangs a breakfast basket on your front-door grille each morning with croissants, baguette, a flask of hot milk. Cheese, charcuterie and eggs are also available if your stay is longer than two nights. In the fridge you’ll find milk, butter, jam, yogurt and fruit compote. Tempting to nip back to bed with it all. A good shower later and you’ll be on your way to explore the town, not so large as to be overwhelming and with lots of surprises.

Step onto the street where children zoom their scooters, mums chatter.

Reviews

What a great place! Beautifully curated and in the centre of a historical, French town. Great for those who like to go out and explore - public transport is easy and affordable, and you can travel to neighbouring towns and cities easily. Carole is a phenomenal host, very attentive and passionate about the area. She will give you plenty of recommendations on where to go, see and eat! The breakfast in the morning was fresh and delicious. I had an absolutely wonderful stay, thank you Carole.

Marta, Bristol

A great place if you like being in the thick of things, Carole's city-rustic B&B gives straight onto a lively little street in the historic centre of Béziers. This converted workshop is the ground floor of her two-storey house and is totally independent. Carole is a delightful, chatty and well-travelled woman who will hang fresh breakfast goodies on your door every morning.

Location

The neighbourhood

The magnificent 12th-century cathedral is a 500m walk, the Canal du Midi and the Nine Locks of Fonséranes just 1.5km. You have a huge choice of bars, cafés and restaurants and Carole recommends lunch at Bar La Victoire (a five-minute walk): excellent value, friendly service, outside seating. Allée Paul Riquet has a flower market every Friday and brocante markets twice a week.

Local points of interest from Carole Gardner

  • Béziers is the oldest city in France. Founded by the Romans and razed during the Cathar crusade, it is now best known as the birthplace of Paul Riquet, the man behind the stately Canal du Midi.
  • Many churches and the magnificent cathedral are open for the public to view with much history attached to them. Of particular interest to many is the Cathar history associated with this region and specifically here in Beziers the St. Mary Magdalene Church.
  • The 9 Locks of Fonseranes are a UNESCO world heritage site, and can be reached either by the Le Petit train running back and forth from the town centre or by a beautiful walk which takes approximately 25 minutes, via the stunning Pont- Vieux over the R.Orb
  • Stroll around the pretty squares or along the Allée Paul Riquet, with its cafes and restaurants, markets and brocantes. Or jump on a bus or train to one of the many beautiful beaches just 15km away, and enjoy the beach bars and the warm Mediterranean Sea.
  • Wander through the streets and find the many Trompe-l'œil that are dotted throughout. Go for a wine tasting at a local domaine, watch an artist at work or participate in a class, attend the local cookery school or take a cruise with lunch on the Canal.
  • There is a lovely selection of restaurants from some with stars to the authentic French bistro with original interiors. Pick up some delicious cheese or charcuterie from the indoor market to make yourself a picnic, and an excellent wine from the nearby cave
