The Experience

Owner Massimiliano has made this chalet unique by hand-carving every bit of wood panelling, decoration and piece of furniture… whatever he didn’t make is a restored traditional family piece. Step inside to the warm, intoxicating scent of Swiss stone pine. You’ll find a little kitchen and four bedrooms with mountain views. Chat, read a book, play a rainy-day card game by the pellet stove in the comfy living room. Massimiliano lives in the house next door; enjoy his breakfast around the kitchen table: local jams, cheeses and bread. He offers B&B in the chalet in the low season – you can have the whole house if you book all the rooms.Children can play in the sunny back garden; there are a few slopes for skiing or Massimiliano takes you snowshoeing. In summer, book a guided hike in the mountains and learn about local herbs. The nearest restaurant is five minutes’ drive away; the nearest town, Fort Bard, with its namesake fortress, is about 20 minutes’ drive.

Reviews

My husband and I stayed at Le Maison du Grand Maman with our two little girls and friends. It is a beautiful, cosy home in the mountains, and Massimiliano is the most charming and genial of hosts. We feel lucky to have learnt so much about the Aosta valley in a lively village off the beaten track.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is the first you’ll encounter when you arrive at the small ski resort of Champorcher, a few miles from Fort Bard fortress and town. The nearest large town, St Vincent, is about 40 minutes by car, and it’s about an hour to Aosta, the capital of the region. Walkers can head to Parco Naturale del Mont Avic, half-an-hour’s drive away. A one-week stay includes Massimiliano’s guided hiking tour.

Local points of interest from Massimiliano Squinabol

  • Mont Avic natural park: small protected area known as ‘little Canada’, great for hikes and land of lakes and rock formations, where the largest natural Alpine lake in Aosta Valley is situated.
  • The Vallée dell’Alleigne: a 3-hour hike to admire 4 different rock formations and the rich variety of plants as Cortusa matthioli which dates back to the Ice Age
  • Bard Fort: fortified complex built on the fortress overseeing the medieval hamlet. The Fort hosts an exhibition called Landscapes in collaboration with Magnum Photos International e Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson and world nature press photo.
  • Issogne Castle: an elegant 14th century building, with frescoed archways and a central courtyard with the famous forged iron fountain with a pomegranate tree, symbol of prosperity.
  • Private hikes and events are organised by your host (Massimiliano).

Introducing

Massimiliano Squinabol

As you can see from the name, this was Massimiliano’s grandmother’s house, and he lives next door with his parents. He left a more traditional job to return to his origins and works as a farmer, sculptor and alpine guide. Many of his wood sculptures in the house are for sale.
