The Experience

Settle down in a tiny Yorkshire hamlet on the fringe of the Howardian Hills AONB. Originally the gardener’s cottage, it’s attached to Ganthorpe Hall, the owner’s family home, but you get a private entrance and pretty garden. Come to stride out into rural landscapes then return to hunker in front of the glowing wood-burner.

Owner Kitty is an artist and has used her creative talent to fill the space with antique finds, warm lighting, colourful textiles and local art, including paintings by her grandfather. This is a generous sort of place: arrive to find the fire lit, help yourself to veggies from the abundant patch, get recommendations for good places to eat and things to do.

It’s a stroll or short drive to the nearest village shop in Terrington, visit Malton for smart delis, bourgie gift shops, a gin distillery and a Saturday market. York is lovely for a day out.

My partner and I enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Garden Cottage. The cottage is perfectly clean and the decor is unique yet tasteful. We loved all the personal touches, and learning about the history of the property. Kitty and her family were perfect hosts, we felt welcome from the moment we arrived. The cottage's location is perfectly suited to those looking to explore on foot, and is right on the doorstep of Castle Howard and the Yorkshire Arboretum.

Peaceful, relaxed and beautifully put together The Garden Cottage is a wonderful getaway for 2. The cottage itself is designed very nicely, with all the amenities you would need for a weekend in the country. We particularly loved lighting up the fire each evening as we curled up to watch movies and relax. The surrounding area is stunning and has plenty of walks, villages and pubs to explore and close to York for a good day out. Kitty is a very good host, friendly and warm, good at respecting your space but also quick to respond to any needs, could not ask for a better host!

Garden Cottage was such a special experience - immaculate, cosy and inspiring. We enjoyed watching a storm roll in across the landscape with the log fire on inside, and had cosy evenings in cooking - the kitchen was well equipped. Kitty greeted us and was on hand for anything we needed. She even dropped off fresh eggs in the morning and rocket from their veg patch. The cottage is a stone's throw from Castle Howard and the Yorkshire Arboretum, where we saw red squirrels. It's also close to York, the moors, and Whitby. We felt very well looked after and wish we'd booked for longer!

Garden cottage is an absolute gem of a place to stay. Beautiful interior design, comfortable, homey with an unbeatable view. Kitty is an amazing host. She showed us around the garden and imagine our joy when she told us that we can help ourselves with some of the delicious vegetables from her garden. The cottage has all you need for cooking, is spacious and close to many beautiful towns, villages and trails. We will definitely go back. Thank you Kitty!!

Last year we stayed for two days and enjoyed Garden Cottage so much that this year we came back for a week :-). Love it. It's so quiet, comfortable, beautifully designed and furnished by Kitty, and with views way into the distance. In the rare sunny weather, this year we discovered that the cottage has TWO little gardens - one for breakfast, one perfect for evening drinks.

Susan, Grange-Over-Sands

This is a gorgeous cottage in an idyllic, peaceful setting. We thoroughly enjoyed feeling immersed in the countryside, yet were not too far from Malton and all the wonderful attractions in the nearby area. The cottage has been restored sympathetically to the age of the property, yet is extremely comfortable and warm. The bed was unbelievably comfy with plush linen bedding. The cottage has its own small garden which is so private, with lovely views. A real gem of a getaway!

Rebecca, Skipton

It's a lovely peaceful cottage with everything you'd need plus a beautiful garden and lovely views out over the fields. Kitty and her partner are very friendle and helpful. We recommend it.

Andy, York

We loved our two night stay at Garden Cottage. Beautifully and imaginatively renovated to a very high standard by the owner, Kitty has thought of everything successfully combining style and function. Set in picture perfect surroundings within striking distance of many attractions and lovely places to eat, there is no shortage of things to see and do. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer. We'll be back!

Julia, Brighton

A very beautiful, magical and peaceful location and accommodation which is exceptionally well thought through and very generously apportioned. The hosts are very helpful and we would love to return.

Kathryn, Leicestershire

A beautifully renovated cottage in a delightful village. Gentle countryside awaits and will not disappoint. The views from the house are lovely and the situation is quiet and perfect for a restful stay. The cottage is very well equipped with stylish furnishings and a super kitchen and bathroom. We had a great stay.

The Garden Cottage is such a delight to be in. We enjoyed fabulous days out in the surrounding countryside, but we're always keen to get back to the cottage to spend the afternoons and evenings in this magical spot. Every detail has been carefully selected and you'd struggle to find a more stylish and perfectly appointed bolthole in all of Yorkshire.

Benjamin, Kingston upon Thames

We had a lovely stay at the cottage. It is really cosy and set up with everything we needed. It has a beautiful setting with views over the garden and beyond. Kitty was really welcoming and helpful with recommendations.

Kristin, Bristol

A very special place. Kitty was very welcoming, the place has been decorated beautifully and has more than everything you need to cook, relax and enjoy the surroundings. The walks from the door were a real treat. Thanks for having us. Hope to see you again soon. Simon and Sarah

Simon, Handforth

Garden Cottage is spacious, bright and warm, even without using the wood-burning stove. It is tastefully decorated, and all the kitchen equipment is top quality, even down to the tin-opener. It is dog-friendly and there are country walks through the Howardian Hills starting from the front door.. The whole stay was a superb experience.

Angus, London

This charming place is located just a short drive away from neighbouring villages and towns, including the lovely castle Howard. The cottage was clean and had all the amenities you'd need to stay comfortable plus more. The self-contained kitchen space was a great addition, given that most shops and cafes close early around the area. We never went hungry because of it. Kitty provided plenty of information and guides to manage your stay while there and was always available if more help was needed. A true gem in the area!

Vik, London

Delightful, well equipped cottage. Comfortable and well presented.

Alison, Cornwall

We had a great stay! Very comfortable cottage with everything you need. The kitchen was really well equipped for cooking, the bedding and linen were fab and the shower pressure was great. Really comfortable and spacious for two, especially if your aim is to unwind and switch off.

Bek, London

Absolutely wonderful! The most relaxing and comfortable cottage...Fabulous interiors and a beautiful setting in the countryside.

Clare, Little Steeping

Opened the door and immediately said 'isn't this LOVELY?'. Kitty has beautifully designed the cottage which is as pretty as the photos, and beautifully functional too. It suited us perfectly for an all-too-brief stay - need more time to sit out in the pretty garden, light the woodburner, read the books or write a novel - it's that sort of place.

Susan, Allithwaite

Just as described! This is a beautiful piece of the world with stunning views and uninterrupted tranquility. Drivable to many cool local attractions with great walks locally. Ideal to sit and relax. Kitty is very proactive and thoughtful, even helped us out when our car got a flat. Can't recommend enough, thank you!!!

Location

The neighbourhood

It's a 15-minute drive to Malton. On the way you can stop at Castle Howard House and Gardens which has super walks and an excellent farm shop, or spend a day in historic York (15 miles). For eating out, you're spoilt for choice: whether you fancy a tasting menu, pizza or really good pub grub, you'll find it in the area.

Local points of interest from Kitty Pennybacker

  • The garden patio looks out into the orchard, where apple, damson, quince and walnut trees grow. You can help yourself to them as and when you feel like it. Also look at our Instagram to getter a better idea of our cottage @gardencottage_ganthorpe
  • You will see and hear birds eating from the bird feeder in the garden, with views into the bucolic fields of the Howardian Hills. Cattle graze in the field below the orchard, you can buy this beef in Castle Howard Farm shop.
  • To the right of the cottage sits our walled garden, here my mother grows a variety of vegetables. We love sharing this with guests and can show what is available when you arrive to get you inspired.
  • The hamlet of Ganthorpe is set within the Howardian Hills and there are multiple walks straight out of the hamlet with no need to get in the car. You can even walk to Castle Howard or our local (very good) village shop in Terrington.
  • The Yorkshire Arboretum sits at the bottom of Ganthorpe and is now hosting a family of red squirrels in its special enclosure. It is a wonderful place for a good walk among a variety of trees and serves great coffee too.
  • Castle Howard is on our doorstep, a great place to visit the grounds and house. Ganthorpe Hall was once part of the the Castle Howard estate until 1921 when the Countess of Carlisle died and Ganthorpe was passed on to her granddaughter Rosalind Toynbee.

Introducing
