The Experience
Wake to daylight streaming through the shutters – and Princes Street a lovely walk or short bus ride away. This couple’s retreat, on the northern edge of Holyrood Park, is so quiet you could be in the country.
Step into a fresh, whitewashed, open-plan space, with a sunny conservatory, a leafy patio garden, and a chic little kitchen to the side. The wood-burner is a wintery delight, and the bed is curtained off at night. Slip into robes after a drenching shower, relax to music or try your hand at knitting – Rebecca leaves you a rummage bag of wool.
Start the day with a hill walk in the park around Arthur’s Seat – Edinburgh’s extinct volcano. Feed the swans on the pretty lochs; relish the views of the city and the sea. Foodie temptations are a stroll away: patisserie at Manna House Bakery; a la carte lunch at the eclectic Gardener’s Cottage, or try the Sheep Heid Inn, the oldest pub in Scotland.

Holyrood Cottage was such a find! Rebecca is the most welcoming and helpful host and the cottage itself is spacious for two and comfortable with many thoughtful additions - fresh bread, milk, butter, jam and a bottle of wine as well as toiletries, washing detergent, folding rack for the washing, plenty of clothes hangers etc. The lounge is large, the bed is large and comfortable and there is a lovely conservatory area as well. The cottage is well-situated for public transport (bus stop is a short walk away) and you can enjoy a pleasant walk across the park to the Palace and the Royal Mile.

Thank you Rebecca for a wonderful welcome to lovely Holyrood Cottage. We really felt at home and comfortable from the first entrance into the cosy, stylish cottage. Such a peaceful retreat yet so close to everything we wanted to do in Edinburgh during our three night stay. So many little touches to make you feel at home and a wonderful imagination to use the space to best effect.

Cleverly thought-through accommodation. Decorated to feel light and airy. Large bed and well equipped kitchen. Location is indeed away from the centre, on a quiet street, but that is its appeal. The walk through the park to the Royal Mile is a delight. Loved it!

We stayed at Holyrood Cottage for the weekend (25/09/2020). We found the cottage to be delightful, with all of the amenities that you would expect and need. There was bread, milk, coffee, tea and wine in the fridge. We wre made to feel welcome from the outset. The COVID restrictions were all followed and we felt safe staying here. Holyrood Cottage is ideally situated backing on to Holyrood Park and a short walk from Arthurs Seat and the Royal Mile. We had a great time and a very relaxing stay.

Delightful, comfortable, cosy cottage providing all the essentials and more for our stay in Edinburgh. The location is wonderful, right next to Holyrood Park with a gate into the park only yards from the front door. We loved walking through the park, past (and once up) Arthur’s Seat to Holyrood House, the Parliament buildings and The Royal Mile. As it was November, we didn’t make use of the conservatory or garden but we did make use of the log burning stove which was delightful in the evenings when we were in. Rebecca is a very welcoming hostess.

Lovely Rebecca is waiting to welcome you to this amazing quiet little gem. Surrounded by green hills but only a short walk to Edinburgh's main sights, it's perfect. After a busy day exploring, return to the log burner on a winter's night or the south facing garden for summer evenings with a glass of wine in hand. Lots of lovely little bistro places nearby, so food lovers won't be disappointed.

Holyrood Cottage was immaculate, lovely and comfortable and beautifully and thoughtfully appointed. With its own little private garden and spacious living area, it is a perfect weekend or short stay bijoux place for two, right next to Holyrood Park and within easy walking distance of the city. Rebecca was a superb host, responding immediately to any questions and going to lengths above and beyond to make our stay as easy and comfortable as possible. The cottage is top of my list for a place to stay whenever I am in Edinburgh. Thank you so very much.

What a fantastic place. It is immaculate and just as gorgeous as it looks in the photos. It has everything you need and has been really well thought out, with lots of lovely touches, even the log fire was laid ready for us to light it. Rebecca was lovely right from the first contact, very helpful and welcoming. It's in an ideal location just yards away from Holyrood Park and walking distance from the city centre. We would highly recommend it and we're already planning our next visit!

We have just had a wonderful weekend at Holyrood cottage and would highly recommend it., in fact I would say it was the best ever self catering accommodation we have stayed in in the UK. We had a warm welcome from Rebecca when we arrived and she was really helpful. She has really put a great deal of effort into making sure visitors have everything they need. The cottage is absolutely lovely and we will definately return.

Location
The neighbourhood
The park and Royal Mile are outside the door. In ten minutes, you are at the Palace, in 35, at the Castle. A walk around the hill brings you to the very old Sheep Heid Inn – they do a great Sunday roast. Closer to home, buses, shops and restaurants are a five-minute stroll away.
Local points of interest from Rebecca McFarland
- Just around the corner, visit the Bellfield Brewery, our local micro brewery and Tap Room – enjoy craft beer in their cute beer garden (covered in winter) and in front of their wood burner. Pop up dining makes for eclectic menus. Regular quiz nights too
- The cottage is within easy walking distance of the city centre. It's situated on the edge of lovely Holyrood Park (a runners and hillwalkers’ paradise) with its three small lochs and giant hill – Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh's extinct volcano.
- The 50-minute walk around the hill gives you breathtaking, panoramic views of the city and the sea. Watch the swans on the lochs then head back to the cottage, light the stove and snuggle down in front of it with a glass of wine – you've earned it!
- A walk around or over the hill brings you to the super-cosy Sheep Heid Inn, Edinburgh’s oldest watering hole, established in 1360. Or wander down to London Road for drinks and food at Herringbone, our neigbourhood bistro hangout.
- Tour the Scottish Parliament building and the Palace of Holyrood House, the Queen’s official Scottish residence – a stone’s throw from the cottage. Scottish Parliament tours are free, but book online in advance.
- The Parliament and Palace sit at the bottom of the Royal Mile. Walk up the Mile and you’re at the Castle – and in the city centre with its abundance of restaurants, shops and attractions.

Introducing
Rebecca McFarland
Rebecca lives next door with her family. Having bought the cottage in a swirly-carpeted, down-at-heel state, “it scrubbed up nicely. Many of her guests return. “It’s so nice to know they love Edinburgh and the cottage as much as I do.”
Staying at Holyrood Cottage was a highlight of our accommodation in the UK. The cottage is beautifully decorated and furnished with everything one would need for a comfortable stay. We were disappointed that the weather was such that we could not enjoy the lovely garden but the wood stove was very welcome after we were caught in a torrential downpour. The location is very central and Rebecca was a wonderful host.
