The Experience

Those who know, or merely enjoy their wines will flock here to taste some of the world’s most prestigious wines and learn about their production. The castle sits on a hillside looking over the World Heritage site of Langhe-Roero-Monferrato and the village of San Martino Alfieri. B&B guests stay either in Dimora diffusa next to the winery and cellars or in Cascina Margherita, a restored farmhouse ideal for groups who seek independence. Both have large and lovely bedrooms, beautiful linens and modern bathrooms along with honesty fridges.

Breakfast can be served outside or in: freshly-squeezed orange juice, eggs to order, local cheeses and meats, breads, cakes and biscuits from the local bakery. Find a quiet spot in the gardens where seats await for a rest and loungers for a snooze, or set off on woodland walks, explore the English-style garden. It’s all dreamy.

A five-minute walk will take you to the village.

Reviews

What more can you ask for – a super comfortable bedroom with amazing views, and breakfast with local produce, fresh breads, jams, eggs and Italian coffee. To fully appreciate its history, I highly recommend the tour of the estate and winery which includes a wine tasting. Excellent! This is a truly stunning location and a great base for exploring further afield.

Location

The neighbourhood

San Martino Alfieri is a pretty hilltop village with a small grocery, a couple of restaurants and a bar. A short walk from the castle is Ristorante Concordia which has been in the same family since 1890 and serves simple, heartwarming traditional food. There are lovely walking and cycling routes, deep in peaceful countryside. There are some stunning medieval villages and towns to explore by car a few minutes away.

Local points of interest from The Family

  • Don’t miss a guided visit of the Marchesi Alfieri Estate, followed by a tasting of its winery’s most representative vintages. The itinerary begins in the gardens of the Castle, proceeds through the atmospheric aging cellars and culminates in the Orangery.
  • Explore the paths that surround the village of San Martino Alfieri and savour the blissful tranquility of Piedmontese countryside. You will discover local architectural spots and marvel at the stunning views of the Alps and the lovingly tendered vineyards.
  • The historic town of Alba, renowned across the world for its white truffles, is just a 30-minute car ride away: try its fabulous dining scene, take a stroll around its Medieval streets and towers, and indulge in some seriously high-end shopping.
  • The Vineyard Landscape of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014: enjoy the breathtaking views from the hilltop of La Morra, visit the Castle of Grinzane Cavour and be intrigued by the Wine Museum in Barolo.
  • The ancient town of Asti can be reached in less than 20 minutes: its Cathedral, Piazza San Secondo and the art collections displayed at Palazzo Mazzetti are well worth a visit. Come in September to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the traditional festivals.
  • Jump on a car (or train from Asti) and within 1 hour you will be in Turin, the first capital city of Italy. Walk through its porticoed streets and piazze, discover its baroque architecture and museums, and pick your favorite historic café.

Introducing

The Family

The castle and estate have been in the same family since the 17th- century but it is the present owners who decided to start up wine production again, with fantastic results. You are looked after by a polite and professional reception team who speak fluent English and brilliantly lead tours and wine tastings.
