The Experience

Choose the apartment in the main house, with a cosy sitting room, open fireplace and a comfy sofa and chairs, or the loft apartment in the grounds with a balcony, wood-burner and roll top for soaks with a view. Both have well-equipped kitchens, neat bathrooms and wood provided for the fires. A cook can be rustled up in advance and the housekeeper is always on hand.

The gardens, filled with fragrant roses in late spring, are a delight. Smooth lawns, herbaceous borders and mature trees provide the backdrop for long summer evenings eating outdoors under the covered veranda, lighting the barbecue, watching the sun go down. Walks are plentiful along quiet country roads or in the Blackstairs and Wicklow mountains.
Sleep peacefully in sumptuous bedrooms filled with antiques and pretty fabrics before tucking into your breakfast hamper of local honey, yogurt, fruit, home baked bread and other treats.

Reviews

This is a wonderful place to stay with old world charm mixed seamlessly with modern convenience beautifully artfully decorated homely yet smart with plenty to do nearby in a very lovely unspoilt part of the world where one can enjoy the sounds of birdsong rather than the buzz of traffic.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is set in a rural spot, but the village of Ballon is a 10-minute drive for a butcher, grocery store and a good café. The nearest restaurants are Sha-Roe Bistro in Clonegall or the Step House Hotel in Borris. Carlow is 20km and has a train station, and the coast is one hour in the car. Fish, ride, golf, take boat trips, visit stately homes and gardens, explore historic Kilkenny.
